Why Are There So Many Different Pacifiers?

The good news is that no matter which infant pacifier you choose the Ingy Bingy Band, a pacifier wristband, has two models so any newborn pacifier will attach to it!

If you’re making a baby registry, you might be overwhelmed by the variety of products. It is tedious to sift through all the reviews to figure out which products you want for your baby. Infant pacifiers would be something you think would be easy to pick out. However, if you go to your local walmart or drug store, you’ll find dozens of different kinds of pacifiers! It’s absolutely insane! Why are there so many different types of pacifiers?!

Let’s break it down.

1. Age: There are different pacifiers for different ages. As your child grows, pacifiers also change shape and firmness. These age guidelines exist to keep your baby safe and ensure the pacifiers work effectively!

  • Growth: As your baby grows, their face will grow and the pacifier they used as a newborn won’t feel as normal. The nipple on pacifiers will get longer and firmer to accommodate your child’s growing mouth.
  • Strength: Your child’s sucking ability will strengthen as they age. Pacifiers for older children are made with a larger shield to prevent choking hazards.

2. Style: There’s many different styles of pacifiers. Here’s some safe things to look for when it comes to style.

  • One Piece: Pacifiers with multiple pieces are going to be the cheapest on the market. However, cheaper comes with the cost of safety. A newborn pacifier with multiple pieces can break and become choking hazards instantly. We always recommend paying a couple of extra dollars for peace of mind!
  • Shape: The shape of the shield on pacifiers has different purposes. The round or oversized shield will gently press up against baby’s nose.
  • Nipple: The two main nipple shapes are rounded or orthodontic. Rounded nipples tend to be easier for babies to take, but orthodontic nipples support the shape of the developing jaw and palate of the baby.

3. Price: More expensive doesn’t always mean better. There’s a variety of pacifiers for a variety of prices. Don’t feel like you need to get the most expensive infant pacifier for it to be effective. Making sure it is safe is the most important part.

4. Feeding: Another factor in the variety of pacifier shapes is how babies are fed. Breastfeeding experts recommend a cylindrical shaped pacifier. This shape allows for your baby’s tongue to wrap around it the same way it wraps around a nipple. Here are our top recommendations for breastfed babies:

  •       Phillips Avent Soothie: My kids love these the most and so does my wallet! These are very inexpensive and easily accessible at a variety of locations and online!
  •       Tommee Tippee Breast-like Pacifier: These are affordable and made to move just like a mother’s nipple!
  •       Ryan and Rose Cutie Pat Round: These are 100% medical grade and incredibly soft! However, pacifiers need to be replaced frequently and they are on the more expensive side!

The good news is that no matter which infant pacifier or newborn pacifier you choose the Ingy Bingy Band has two models so any newborn pacifier will attach to it! The Ingy Bingy Band is a pacifier wristband velcros around baby’s wrist and turns any pacifier into a pacifier wristband, helping them self-soothe from as early as 4 months. This pacifier bracelet saves you time and frustration because, whichever pacifier your breastfed baby loves, your baby will always have access to it on their own. You’ll never have to worry about finding that sacred sanity saver ever again if that infant pacifier keeps falling out!
