How to Survive a Thanksgiving Car Ride
If you have given birth in the last few months, thanksgiving might be your first big road trip. I used to get so much anxiety over travelling in the car. I want you to avoid that anxiety and simply enjoy the holiday!
Here are our best tips for making it through a Thanksgiving road trip:
- Pacifier: Baby’s love to suckle on mama’s breast. It’s comforting and helps them to calm down. However, if mama is the only one who can calm down baby, that can be overwhelming, exhausting, and impractical for car rides! Pacifiers are a great car ride (or anytime) substitute!
- Ingy Bingy Band: The Ingy Bingy band is the pacifier accessory you need to make sure your baby stays calm while you stay focused on the road! It is a pacifier wristband (or pacifier bracelet) that velcros around baby’s wrist to help them self-soothe from as early as 4 months! This pacifier wristband allows baby to stay calm, happy, or asleep since they will constantly have access to their newborn pacifier!
This pacifier bracelet just makes me feel more comfortable as a parent. Absolutely no shame if you use a pacifier clip, but those make me anxious due to the strangulation and choking hazards. Plus, your baby can effectively use this younger in life!
3. Teething Toys: Teething is one of the most difficult things for newborns. Teething toys help to soothe their sore gums and quench that desire for nonnutritive sucking. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but some great teethers include: baby banana toothbrush and teether, RazyBaby Silicone teether, Z-Vibe
4. Sit in the back: If there are multiple adults have one passenger sit in the back. This way if baby drops toys or just needs to see you to calm down, you don’t have to pull over to stop every time.
5. Pump bottles ahead of time: Depending on how often your baby needs to eat, it may be better to pump bottles ahead of time or pump in the car and give the bottle immediately to your baby and feed them while you are driving to avoid long extended stops!
6. Singing: Singing is fun way to keep your baby entertained and they cannot continuously toss it on the floor and yell at you to pick it up while you are driving! Did you know that there is actually a song that was designed with science to make your baby happy and laugh? It was tested at various stages in order to find the right tempo and melody. Try it out today! The repetitive jingle may get you eventually, but I’d still take a baby full of giggles over screams and tears any day!
7. Schedule stops: If you have an especially long road trip, schedule stops along the path. This way, you can better decide, if baby is extra fussy, to “just make it 15 more minutes” with a song or toy to our next stop or if you need to add an extra stop to your trip!
