Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable Diapers

Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable Diapers

A newborn pacifier is a great way to calm your baby down and keep them occupied while they get their diaper changed! No matter which infant pacifier you pick you need to get an Ingy Bingy Band, a pacifier wristband, to go with it!

We live in a world where we are trying to do better. We have put so much waste into our planet and we are living with the repercussions of constantly disposing of things. So now you’re becoming a parent and you’re questioning, how do I reduce waste with diapers? Should I use cloth diapers? Do I have the patience to use cloth diapers?!

Let’s start at the beginning. First off, diapers are very important to a baby’s health. One study says, “Cloth diapers have relatively poor absorbency, especially under high urine and stool loads, leading to diaper leakage. Furthermore, these products were inferior at sequestering urine and feces away from the infant’s skin, resulting in skin overhydration and enzymatic attack of the skin by fecal proteases and lipases, as evidenced by severe diaper dermatitis (DD) rates of ~60%.”*

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use cloth diapers! It just means you need to be very mindful of the cloth diapers you are using and how frequently you are changing diapers! You want to make sure you are buying cloth diapers from reputable brands that use high quality fabric.

Some great brands are:

Petite Crowns

Charlie Banana

Esembly

Mon Petit Chou

When you shop these brands you’ll see a variety of different cloth diapers to purchase. There’s diaper covers, inner diapers, and inserts! There are multiple different layers to prevent leaving, especially at night!

Why use cloth diapers?

  1. Conservation: As mentioned above, using disposable diapers adds to the ever increasing amount of trash on our planet. Using cloth diapers helps reduce our carbon footprint!
  2. Money: Cloth diapers are fantastic money savers! It costs more up front, but down the line you will save thousands.  CLoth diapers usually come with a variety of snaps which allows your child to wear them for a long time. You won’t need to keep buying bigger sizes!
  3. Safety: Disposable diapers can have harmful chemicals like chlorine or perfumes that can cause dryness and irritation.
  4. Potty Training: Not one of the top reasons, but still a great perk of using cloth diapers is that kids typically don’t like the feeling of soiling themselves and they can tell the feeling sooner in a cloth diaper. Kids are more likely to be potty trained sooner than their disposable diaper counterparts!

How do you clean cloth diapers:

  1. When you dispose of dirty diapers, put them in a wet bag until wash day.
  2. Wash every 2-3 days.
  3. Put in the dryer or line dry for the sun to naturally bleach the stains!
