What to Pack in a Diaper Bag for Baby Outings
Share
There is a very specific kind of confidence that comes from leaving the house with a baby and realizing you actually packed everything you need.
And then there is the other kind.
The kind where your baby has a blowout in the middle of a public place, you reach into your diaper bag for a clean outfit, and…you didn't pack one.
Ask me how I know.
I've been the mom who overpacked my diaper bag, and I've also been the mom who underpacked it. After carrying a partially naked baby out of a public place one too many times, I've learned that you don't need to bring your entire house with you. You just need the right stuff.
Diaper Bag Essentials for Baby Outings
Let's start with the obvious: diapers and wipes.
Pack enough diapers for however long you'll be gone, plus a few extras. Because babies have a funny way of needing a diaper change approximately five minutes after you thought you were done changing them.
You'll also want a portable changing pad, diaper cream if your baby uses it, and a grocery bag for clothes.
And please, please pack an extra outfit. Diaper blowouts, spit-up , and food mishaps happen. Eventually you'll find yourself very grateful that you have an extra onesie sitting at the bottom of your diaper bag.
Don't Forget Feeding Supplies
What you pack for feeding depends completely on your baby. If you're nursing, bring whatever makes feeding easier for you, including a nursing cover if you use one. If your baby takes formula or bottles, pack enough for your outing with a little extra. And if your baby eats solids, don't forget snacks. Because a hungry baby can go from perfectly content to deeply offended in about 30 seconds.
Pack the Pacifier or Have Baby Wear It
If your baby uses an infant pacifier, you already know how important that little piece of silicone can be. So yes, pack the pacifier or better yet, have your baby wear the Ingy Bingy Band.
The Ingy Bingy Band is a buttery-soft pacifier wristband that velcros around your baby's wrist and attaches to their pacifier. Unlike a traditional pacifier clip that attaches to clothing, the Ingy Bingy Band keeps the pacifier right with your baby.
It's also designed to work with every pacifier on the market, with two styles to accommodate different pacifier designs. Think of it as a pacifier bracelet that helps keep baby's favorite comfort tool close instead of disappearing underneath the restaurant table.
The Simple Diaper Bag Checklist
For most outings, keep it simple:
- Diapers
- Wipes
- Changing pad (optional)
- Diaper cream
- extra outfit
- Feeding supplies
- Snacks, if needed
- Nursing cover, if you use one
- Pacifier
- Ingy Bingy Band pacifier wristband
- Bag for dirty clothes
- Water or bottle
You don't need to prepare for every possible disaster. You just need to prepare for the things that usually happen. Pack the bag, put on the Ingy Bingy Band, grab the baby, and go. And maybe this time, you'll even make it home with everyone's clothes still on.
